Voies Vertes, Technology and a Link with Our Past
Projected Timeline : Ongoing / December 2023 – 2025 March
Authors : Carole Reid, Helidth Ravenholm
Objective : Voies Vertes are cycle paths criss-crossing much of France and connecting with other, similar paths across Europe. Their aim is to promote recreational as well as everyday cycling, both to bring locals and tourists alike closer to historic points of interest and the countryside and maximise green transportation. Historic points are of particular interest – they are not only interesting from a revenue point for the country investing in domestic and foreign tourism, but also as an anchor of sorts to local heritage. In this project, our aim is to explore how accessible heritage points are via the Voies Vertes, as well as what technology is used to raise awareness of them and to enable interaction with them. During the project, we will use traditional anthropological tools as well as new – including documenting our work (visual anthropology) via tools typically preferred by average users today, such as the phone, social media and a vlogging camcorder.
